OUR HISTORY

Mt. Zion’s history from 1921 to 1935 was marked by significant growth and spiritual development under the leadership of Reverend Lindsey. During his tenure, construction began on a new worship facility on Wrightsboro Road, and the congregation officially moved into the new sanctuary in 1921. Reverend Lindsey oversaw the establishment of several foundational ministries and organizations, including the Sunday School, the Baptist Young People’s Union (B.Y.P.U.), the Senior Choir, and the Senior Mission. He also helped form the Usher/Usherette Board, the Deaconess Board, and

Clubs 1 through 15. The church’s growth during this era was further supported by a generous donation of choir seating from Reverend C.T. Walker of Tabernacle Baptist Church. Reverend Lindsey faithfully served the congregation until his passing on February 15, 1935.

Following a brief pastoral vacancy, Reverend H. W. Phinizy was elected pastor on March 13, 1936, and was officially granted an indefinite tenure on February 15, 1937. One of his immediate goals was eliminating the church’s debt, a milestone successfully accomplished by July 12, 1936. Under his long leadership, the church modernized its facilities by installing indoor bathrooms, central heating and air conditioning, and new bulletin boards, alongside completing various carpentry improvements and purchasing additional land for parking. Growth continued with a groundbreaking ceremony for an educational building on June 10, 1956, which opened in January 1957. Furthermore, Reverend Phinizy organized several choirs, established the Annual Men’s and Women’s Day Program in 1975, and ordained fifteen deacons before declining health led to his retirement.

On November 5, 1975, Mt. Zion called Reverend Johnny Bussey to serve as pastor. During his tenure, which lasted until his resignation in 1981, he appointed eight trustees and ordained two deacons. Following his departure, Reverend Dr. T. O. Hudgens was called to pastor the church in March 1982. Under his leadership, several auxiliaries were added to the church, including the Women’s Council, the Board of Finance, and the Birthday Club. His other notable accomplishments included appointing Brother Eddie Green, Sister Edna Sims, and Sister Lois Keith to the Trustee Board, as well as

overseeing the remodeling of the church pulpit by Brother Alonzo Brown. Reverend Dr. Hudgens resigned from his position shortly after, on

August 24, 1983.

Reverend Thomas Walker was elected pastor in March 1984, initiating a transformative era of physical improvements at the Wrightsboro Road location. Under his guidance, the church completely remodeled the men's and women's restrooms, installed handicap-accessible ramps, reupholstered the pews and pulpit furniture, and sealed and painted the roof. Additional cosmetic work included painting the exterior woodwork, installing Venetian blinds, and repainting the sanctuary. To accommodate the growing congregation, the church also acquired properties on Roulette Lane, Linden Street (now Lee Beard Way), and Wrightsboro Road to expand its parking capacity.

In tandem with these physical renovations, Reverend Walker significantly expanded the church’s ministries and community outreach. He established a wide variety of new programs, including the Young Kings, Young Queens, the Praise Team, God’s Little Angels, and God’s Anointed In Motion (A.I.M.) Liturgical Dance Ministry. He also implemented the Hospitality, Healthcare, Culinary, and Progressive Ministries. To deepen spiritual education, the church introduced Youth Bible Study, an Auxiliary Board, educational classes, an Evangelism Team, a Media and Communications Ministry, a Children’s Church for ages 11 and under, and a modernized church website featuring online giving options.

Leadership development also thrived during Reverend Walker's tenure. He appointed eighteen trustees, ordained six deacons, and ordained four ministers: Reverend Oliver Hobbs, Reverend Eric Adams, Reverend Christopher Leslie, and one additional minister referenced in church records. He also appointed six youth ministers, including Reverends Adams, Evans, and Leslie, alongside Flavius Hobbs and Reginald Bryant, with

Reverend Chavas Boyd later stepping into the Youth Minister role in 2016.

For nearly 100 years, Mt. Zion worshipped and ministered at the corner of Wrightsboro Road and Linden Street. Through God's blessings and the vision of Reverend Walker, the church ultimately purchased its current campus. This transition reached a historic milestone on October 31, 2010, when a moving farewell service was held at 1438 Wrightsboro Road, and members exited the building singing “We’re Marching Up to Zion.” One week later, on November 7, 2010, the congregation officially entered and worshipped in their new sanctuary located at 2526 Lumpkin Road in Augusta, Georgia. In July 2014, the original Wrightsboro Road cornerstone was relocated and placed beside the new Lumpkin Road cornerstone to bridge the church's past and future.

Since relocating to the present campus, Mt. Zion has continued to improve and expand its facilities. Recent upgrades include repainting the sanctuary and foyer, renovating the upstairs and lobby restrooms, installing safety rails on the exterior stairs and choir stand, and placing entrance placards throughout the facility. With Reverend Chavas Boyd being appointed as Pastor in 2019, Mt. Zion continues to move forward in faith, building upon its rich legacy of worship, service, discipleship, and community outreach.
